What is music?

Although music only has one Dictionary definition, it can be defined as many different things based upon the genre of music and the audience it appeals to. For example, rap music that appeals to the teen age grouped might be defined by them as real life stories being unveiled to the world in the form  of "rhythm and poetry". Rock music on the other hand, that appeals to the teen age group as well, might be defined as an explosion of emotions that tell a story and is set to music in order to portray a certain message or feeling to its audience. With such a broad definition a bystanders is left with the responsibility of making the decision as to what music really means to them and how they will it affect their motives, decisions, and lives. They control how deep of a power music actually holds, what settings the like to listen to it in, and how much of their life they will let it engulf.

does hip hop music induce police brutality?

http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=SmtIAAAAIBAJ&sjid=g4IMAAAAIBAJ&pg=2853,5355821&dq=how+music+affects+our+generation&hl=en

Its been claimed for many years now that young African American males as well as males of the Hispanic races, have been harassed, arrested, or even killed by policemen. However, the interesting thing that threads almost each and every one of these cases is the fact that when approached, the bystanders had been loudly listen to "hip hop" or "rap" music. So the apparent question is, is this so called "police brutality" being induced by the racial factor or the musical? I know that most of the young men that i know that listen to rap music are all African American and claim that just because they listen to rap music does not mean that they are thugs or gangsters, therefore police officers are just stereotyping them as being affiliated with a gang, with no prior knowledge of them at all. And therefore, are violating their rights.

In the article, a young man was listening to his rap music loudly and is approached by two officers. The officers claimed that the man reached back into his back pocket reaching for a gun, so they shot and killed him. However, it was later identified and proven that the young man had actually been reaching for his wallet but the officers did not give him a chance to do or say anything in his defense before carelessly opening fire. Close friends of the victim claimed that the police in that area had been very brutal lately with anyone who they assumed could have been associated with gangs. So one of the victims rapper friends made a project where many different rappers came from many different places, putting their differences aside in the sake of the art and speaking out against ruthless police brutality.

Does music's effect on a person depend on the circumstances?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-pC3qo-tj0
In this video, there is a young man doing a questionarre for his youtube followers and he opens up the video by asking them if there is a certain time they they like to listen to music. And if so, why? d they feel that during this time the music is more effective, as if that's when they can relate most? He then goes on to elaborate about how recently, he had his own experience with music and how it just seemed to be the perfect moment for the music to be able to reach him most, and that's how he came to realize his favorite time to listen to music. This caught my attention because it may also have to do with the argument that certain types of music affect people certain types of way. The allows a speaker to be able to argue that maybe it is not the music itself that influences these actions, but the time that the listener is listening to the music, because if that gap of time if filled with a different type of music, the listener could also listen to that bad music an hour later and not act on it, because it was not as powerful as the one within the specific time frame.

Decoding Hip-Hop's Cultural Impact

http://diverseeducation.com/article/3653/
This article talks about how a professor did some studies in rough minority neighbor hoods of mostly blacks and latinos, who supposedly are the targeted audience of hip hop and rap music today. Therefore, they feel as though the affects of hip hop and rap music will be seen the most in these neighborhoods. In this article I learned that most people believe that events that takes place in these "ghettos" are effects being felt as a result of rap musics influence on the youth of the neighborhoods. However, it may be the other way around. In most cases, this music is a result of the influence being put on the industry by today's youth and they are the audience that is being targeted because that is the lifestyle that artists know young people will relate to because they know the influence that these "ghettos" have actually had on most rappers today.

Youth Voices Artice

http://youthvoices.net/discussion/how-can-music-affect-generation
This article is not based upon fact, but is a direct example of music's influence on our generation because this paper is written by a young person raised in our generation of music and because of what society tells him, he has developed a very clear biased against certain genres of music. And is more expressing his dislikes of these genres as opposed to really addressing the affect of ALL types of music on our generation. This in itself, is a reflection of musics affect on our generation.

The purpose of this article, was supposedly to reflect on the affects of today's music on our generation, However the author has let his own emotions and opinions eclipse the actual intentions of the article. Therefore instead of educating his audience of the diversity of music today and going into depth about a few of the genres to gain many different perspectives, he is just being ignorant towards the genres he doesn't like and pushing his opinions one the audience.

How does music affect the generation of today in America?

http://www.hiphopisread.com/2012/04/secret-meeting-that-changed-rap-music.html
This is an artical that tells one mans story with his incident with rap music and how he is seeing that not only his decision, but the decisions of other has changed the face of rap music for the worst and he is observing the affects of this first hand. He talks about having a guilty conscience but knowing the battle that he fought with his self for a long time and reminding himself that he had to take a stand because what was being done was wrong. Then he talks about coming to the realization of having to live with his decision every day.

He also he talks about how he cant believe that the things that were talked about in that meeting are actually coming to life. This illustrates not only how this music affects my generation, but everyone. It shows just how greedy the older generation is and how they will do anything for money. He also begins to realize just how evil the music industry is, and sadly, that this whole situation just reflects the ignorance of my generation.
